Hell froze over
TCU brings a championship-caliber hockey team to the wild west
“We're going to have a pretty unbelievable season. Last year we just came up short in the finals and that just made the entire team hungrier for this season... we’re going to be relentless this year.” - Luke German
Before the puck even dropped, the team fantasized of hoisting the championship trophy at the end of the season.
Founded in 2012, TCU hockey is an ACHL division II club hockey team.
Stepping into the TCU hockey locker room is pure chaos: hockey tape flying, jokes exchanged and laughter echoing throughout.
It’s here that despite being 1,850 miles from his origins in Airdrie, Alberta, you’ll find Luke German right at home.
German is expected to be a key player in the fight for a championship this year Before attending TCU, German played for multiple junior hockey leagues in the ACHL, BCHL and NAHL. In his first year playing as a forward for TCU's club team in the 2023-24 season he averaged an impressive 1 goal per game.
“He definitely could have played D1 if he wanted,” said teammate Ethan Schier. “He’s a sneaky guy on the ice: he's so relaxed, but he's so good at playing that he could just pull something out of a hat at any moment.”
Schier will also be a major contributor from the center position, averaging 1.23 points per game last season. Far from his hometown of Ashburnham, Massachusetts where he grew up in a log cabin with his family, his eccentric personality has become central to the team’s chemistry
“He's an absolute character. Everybody loves him. He definitely rides his own wave, commented German
TCU beat Baylor 12-5 in their first game, Friday Sept. 13.
“We're going for that championship after falling short last year,” said Luke.
“We brought in a lot of new good players, and all of our returners are really solid players. I think we got a really good shot at going all the way.”
