Fighting the flu: TCU nursing students lead campus vaccination effort

TCU Nursing will be administering flu vaccines to community members on Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m in the University Recreation Center.
The flu clinic will be open to all members of the TCU community and there is no charge for receiving a vaccination.
Community members participating in the clinic will sign a consent form prior to their vaccination.
“Our goals for this clinic are to vaccinate 2,000 community members and produce a safe clinic for all community members,” Ella Fischer, a senior nursing student from Austin, said.
Fischer, who is head of the marketing team for the clinic said there has been a learning curve with developing marketing strategies.
“We have worked with marketing students to help us with various things like making flyers and with our Instagram we have created specifically for the clinic," she said. "We also have collaborated on posts with TCU’s Instagram account to increase the amount of people we reach."
Johnny Sifuentes, a senior nursing student and external relations director for the clinic, said there are many reasons for why community members should receive the flu vaccine.
“We see on the CDC website that the flu results in about 330,000 deaths around the world for those who are not vaccinated and we are running this clinic because it is important we all do our part in keeping our community members safe,” Sifuentes said.
Sifuentes said that alongside marketing, budgeting has been one of the challenges the clinical group has faced.
“Our budget for this clinic has remained the same amount from previous years and in many ways, this has limited us in the amount of people we can reach and what we could possibly accomplish during this clinic," Sifuentes said.
Those who are interested in receiving their flu vaccine or learning more about the clinic, should visit @tcu.fluclinic on Instagram.
Some community members, like those of TCUPD, have already received their vaccinations.
